Laser Acne Scar Removal

Laser Acne Scar Removal

Getting acne well over your teenage years can be quite worrisome. You might have had a few zits here and there when you were still young and in high school.

You thought that you would just outgrow that phase. But, if you are already in your 20’s, 30’s or 40’s even and still get acne, it can be stressful and depressing, to a point. However, just with anything, there is always a solution to your skin condition woes.

There are quite a few choices to get that clear skin you have been longing for – from home remedies, over-the-counter topical creams, clinical acne solutions to laser acne removal treatments.

The Solution To Your Acne Problems

Aside from being unsightly, acne can leave you not just with a blemished face, but with a bruised ego and a scarred self-esteem. That is something that could be a challenge to overcome especially if you are well into your 30s and still coping with a skin condition that is most associated with teenagers.

Asian skin have it harder when it comes to acne because of a very thin dermis, which makes their risk of getting hyperpigmentation and scars higher. This means that when you get acne, it is more visible and has a tendency to easily scar your face.

However, it may be reassuring to know that approximately three quarters of the population will get some form of acne between the ages of 11 to 30 years old. And, it affects people regardless of ethnicity and gender. But, as reassuring as it may sound, there still no amount of statistics that can give you a sigh of relief when you are suffering from severe acne.

If you have been one of those people who have heavily relied on over-the-counter creams and pills and have less than noticeable effects or have reactions to these medications, you might want to consider visiting your dermatologist and seek clinical advise on which acne removal treatments are available and suitable for your skin type. Options available include chemical peels and laser acne removal treatments. These clinical treatments are used when creams and medications may not work.

Chemical peels use a solution to strip off dead skin cells on your face, which will leave you with a much smoother and improved skin with less acne and scars. However, if you are iffy about having a chemical solution lathered on your face, another great alternative is the laser acne removal treatment. But, if you are not very familiar with this procedure, here are a few facts that you need to know about having this procedure done.

How Does It Work?

MOSAIC Laser for acne removal treatment is a non-invasive skincare procedure that uses a device, which emits a light or laser that excites, damages and kills compounds living inside the acne bacteria called porphyrins.

There are typically two types of laser treatments available – the ablative, which targets the epidermis or the surface skin cells, and non-ablative, which works the dermal collagen or mid layer of the skin. A laser treatment called fractional laser treatment directs a balance between hitting both the epidermis and dermal collagen by delivering a laser beam into the skin called microthermal treatment zones (MTZ).

What Can It Do?

This clinical procedure is used to treat acne scars and skin pigmentation, which can be found either on the face, back, chest or any part of the body where acne is visible. It is also used as a treatment for fine lines and wrinkles by causing a reaction on the dermis to stimulate collagen remodeling and formation of new collagen.

Also, while it is quick to perform, you would not want to rush your doctor and regret it later because you did not get the nose you had hoped for, do you? Your doctor will always meticulously perform the procedure well enough that you will be satisfied with the result, even if it may take longer than five minutes.

How Can I Get Started With The Treatment?

Before you jump into having this treatment done, as with any clinical procedure, a consultation with your dermatologist is in order. This is the time when your dermatologist will assess your skin condition and define the problem areas. You may also want to inform your doctor about the treatments, whether it be home remedies or prescription medications, that you have used to ensure that none of these will affect your possible laser acne removal treatment. From there, a treatment pattern will be prescribed to target the areas you may want to be corrected.

How Is The Procedure Performed?

After your consultation, you have to strip your face off with anything that you have put on to conceal your acne and acne scars. So, this means you will have to remove all your make-up and start the procedure with a clean slate. Also, you may also need to remove any jewelry that you are wearing near your face. So, men and women, you need to take off your earrings, necklaces and nose piercings.

Since the procedure will need to use laser, your dermatologist will apply an anesthetic cream to the treatment area. This is to numb your skin of the mild burning sensation that comes with the treatment. The anesthetic cream is then wiped after several minutes and a gliding gel will be applied to your skin. This helps for easy maneuvering of the laser light device to move on the MTZ. The amount of time for the entire procedure will depend on the scope of skin area. But more or less, a treatment for the entire face lasts between 30 to 45 minutes.

After the procedure, a cooling device will be used to reduce the discomfort on the skin. Then, the gliding gel will be wiped off of your face. You are all set, but, not quite.

Does It Hurt?

This question might be lingering in your mind. Even though laser acne removal treatment is non-invasive, it does come with a mild and slight pain. Remember, the procedure uses laser, which means that you will experience sunburn sensation after the procedure has been done. Beauty comes with a small price as they say. So be prepared for this one.

Also, you might have minimal swelling, which will usually die down after 2 to 3 days. Your skin will also turn a bit pinkish for the next 3 to 5 days after the procedure is done.

Is There A Post-treatment Regimen I Need To Follow?

There really is not much complicated post-treatment regimen that you need to follow. However, since the procedure entails shedding off dead skin cells, you will experience flaking and drying of the skin as the new skin replaces the old one. This can be counteracted by using a gentle moisturizing cream. Usually, your dermatologist may prescribe you with a special cream that help you hydrate and moisturize your chapped skin.

You may also need to protect your skin from the sun by using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher after your treatment. Your skin is still sensitive during the healing period, so you need to shield it from too much exposure from the sun.

Is This A One-time Deal?

This all depends on the consultation that will have with your dermatologist. But, typically, it will take more than one session for you to see optimum result. A range between 3 to 5 sessions may be recommended depending on your acne condition. Treatment sessions are carried out every 2 to 6 weeks.

Sensitive Asian Skin

When considering laser acne removal treatments, it is important that you consult a credible and well-trained dermatologist. Remember that Asian skin is exceptionally sensitive as compared to any other ethnic skin types. A laser treatment not administered properly will result to hyperpigmentation. This could leave you with brown blotched or red spots.

While fractional laser treatment is the safest for Asian skin types, it is still always best to seek the advice of a dermatologist who specializes on Asian skin.

Having pimples and acne in your teenage years can indeed be daunting, but more so if you are old enough to have your own teenage child. It does leave a saddening mark in your self-esteem and confidence. But again, acne just as with any skin condition can be treated.
